Cast Drawing, 2022. Charcoal on paper, 24 x 18 in.
Exhibited at Charcoal Visions at the Fort Smith Regional Art Museum, Fort Smith, Arkansas from February 16 to May 19, 2024.
This cast drawing was a way to measure how much I improved in drawing with charcoal. At the beginning of the Fall 2022 semester, I drew a plaster cast that was done from my own skills before completing the drawing fundamental class. There was a clear difference between the two drawings where I looked at each part of the plaster cast as individual shapes rather than a part of a face or locks of hair. This was drawn based on observation, so I had to use various methods to recreate it on paper. To start, I made a ground to box in the overall shape and used the landscaping method to get close to accurate proportions. The drawing began rough, but I kept refining each area until it was finished. I ensured the parts of the face closer to the viewer had a higher contrast and sharpness. That would give the drawing the illusion that it was three dimensional.
